Year 6 Visit to Bhaktivedanta Manor June 2011

Last Wednesday Year 6 went to a Hindu temple where we learnt about their culture, how they live and a little bit about their faith. We looked at many different things such as the greenhouses with their sacred plants. We looked at the sacred cows and bulls and enjoyed a ride on a cart pulled by bulls. The Hindus name their bulls after anything to do with their god and demi-gods. We were shown round by a member of the community who answered all our questions. After the ride on the bulls we worked our way back to the main building. When we arrived we went upstairs into a room and a man called Indriyesha talked to us about Hinduism. Some children dressed up as Hindu gods and we were reminded about the famous Hindu story about Rama and Sita. Before lunch we had the opportunity to dress in traditional Indian clothing.

We were then treated to a wonderful vegetarian lunch of vegetable curry with paneer (a type of cheese), rice and freshly made chapatis. We also enjoyed some lovely homemade cookies. After lunch we had the opportunity to shop and also have our faces painted. Altogether it was a wonderful visit and we would recommend it to everyone and like to thank our hosts.

  Year 1 RE June 2011

Year 1 have been learning about natural wonders of the world in RE. This week we learned about the Jewish festival of Sukkot. This is usually celebrated in the Autumn and is a thanksgiving for the fruit harvest. The sukkah is a flimsy shelter which Jewish families live in during the festival. All meals are eaten inside the sukkah and many sleep there as well. This shows total trust in God for their safety. We coloured and cut out fruits to hang fromt the roof. We hope you enjoyed looking at it.

Year 1 Sukkot Sukkah June 2010

In Year 1 we have been learning about how religious people show their thankfulness for the natural world. This week we learned about the Jewish festival of Sukkot. This festival is held in the autumn, lasts for seven days and is like the Christian harvest festival. We built a Sukkah in the playground. This is a temporary hut with at least 3 sides and a roof covered sparsely with branches. This lets the rain in and allows you to see the stars. We coloured fruits and hung them from the roof to represent the fruits that Jews thank God for. They often eat in the Sukkah. We asked Josh from Reception to come and inspect it, as he is very knowledgeable about the Jewish faith. We think he approved! We had a lot of fun and loved showing the Sukkah to our families after school

Year 5's trip to the Radlett and Bushey Reformed Synagogue May 2010

On Wednesday the 26th of May 2010 Year 5 went on a trip to the Radlett and Bushey Synagogue. We had lots of fun learning how to write our names in Hebrew and dressing up in Kippahs and Talliths. We arrived at 10:15 and were greeted by one of the members of the choir, when it was time to depart to school we were allowed to try some Matzah and Challah bread. It was delicious! We then boarded the coach and headed back to school.
