Year 6 Microscopic Marvels Jan 2011

For the past three weeks Year Six have been lucky enough to have a Richard Hale Science teacher come into school to help us learn more about micro-organisms. We did lots of fun activities such as, we were given an agar jelly coated petri dish to grow microbes in. We chose four surfaces; one had to be your finger and then we had to rub onto the four sections of jelly. When we got them back lots of bacteria, fungus and viruses were present. The week after we investigated the conditions needed for microbes to grow on bread. This was everyone's favourite. Finally we looked at yeast and how it gives off gas as it respires. Miss Phillips did a lot of things with us that we couldn't have normally done in school. Overall it was a great experience for everyone and we all thoroughly enjoyed it! Thank you to her for her time.

Year 5 Spherical Shenanigans Sept 2010
New topics are underway and Year 5 had a memorable time on Tuesday finding out what they did and did not know about the Sun, Earth and moon, along with what they would like to find out. They used a load of balls of different sizes to determine the relative size and distance between of each of these bodies. Here are Holly, Toby and Dan doing their best Atlas impressions ...

  Science Week June 2010

This week has really provided a sense of awe and wonder for all of our children with a good number of special events and activities designed to develop scientific thinking and provoke thought and excitement about science. Richard Hale, Simon Balle, GSK, Quantum Theatre, Splats Circus, Hayes Hill Farm, 'The Bug Man!,' 'The Bubble Lady!!' and 'The Rocket Man!!!' (Mr Dean Park, one of our governors) all featured in what was a very special week for our children.

"I really liked the elephant toothpaste!" Keira in Reception.

"My favourite bit were the butterflies!" Sofie in Reception , when talking about creating a butterfly's wings with filter paper using chromatography.

"This week was Science Week. In Year 5 we made friction spiders and kaleidoscopes. A lady came in to show us experiments and to talk to us about science and we watched a play entitled 'Bin Raider,' which reinforced the message of 'reduce, reuse and recycle' from Quantum Theatre. On Wednesday, a man called Mr Park came in to talk to us about forces and what makes a good rocket. My favourite activity was making the kaleidoscope, because when you looked inside it looked really cool, fantastic and amazing. Altogether we think it was a really fun week!" Isabella 5CG

"In Science Week I really enjoyed 'Over the Rainbow' because I found it amazing how Dr Jasmine used light to make art. It was also good because she made physics extra interesting. I also enjoyed the rocket experiment because was great fun and I enjoy investigating. Everyone's rockets were different. It was great how creative Science can be." Sarah 6ME

Crazy Creatures Competition Winners April 2010

Congratulations to Luke and James in Year 6 for succeeding as joint overall county winners in the 'Crazy Creatures' Herts SetPoint competition - we knew their entry was of very high quality.

Crazy Creatures March 2010

As part of National Science and Engineering Week, our children were invited to take part in a 'Create a Crazy Creature Competition' organised by Setpoint Herts. All children in Years 1-6 were challenged (in pairs) to create a crazy creature using only three pieces of card and a glue stick. The creatures had to be imaginative, creative and structurally sound (meaning all limbs needed to stay attached to torsos!!!) There was also an emphasis on teamwork and co-operation and this was 'crazily' abundant. A great time was had by all!

The standard across the whole school was absolutely fantastic and judging proved to be 'crazily' difficult. The whole staff judged all ten creatures which made the final. The overall winning creature, to go forward to the Hertfordshire final was created by ... James and Luke. Well done to all who took part, and in particular to James and Luke for being the overall winners.

The Smooth Operators In Year 4 March 2010

This week Year 4 explained all about the healthy aspects of the smoothies they designed and enjoyed. They persuasively made them sound incredibly appealing and highly nutritious. Here are some photos of Year 4 making the smoothies as part of their 'Healthy Me!' topic. This involves exploring the features of a balanced and healthy diet and encouraged the childrenn to eat 5 a day. The smoothies went down a treat. Well done Year 4 - very smooth!

  Year 6 Studying Micro-organisms Jan 2010

This week Year 6 were agar-st! and extremely cultured! studying micro-organisms under the watchful eye of James Brett, a partnership science teacher from Richard Hale School. The pupils had an absorbing afternoon looking at the bacterial cultures they had produced under carefully controlled laboratory conditions. The children had managed to cultivate various bacterial delights, and had a memorable first hand learning experience studying their various colonies! These were sealed throughout and afterwards were incinerated at Richard Hale. Thank you to James for his considerable time and effort.
