  Year 4

  Tree-mendous Effort March 2011

Year 4 continue to fly the flag for all things green and environmental. They planted 59 sapling trees this week and were thoughtful enough to present Mrs Dutt with their 60th for her birthday and garden. Well done to them.

Year 4 Indoor Athletes Nov 2010

Year 4 attended Wodson Park for an afternoon of indoor athletics run by the local secondary schools. They hugely enjoyed the afternoon, which featured: chest pass, speed bounce, javelin!!!, jumping and running, with each receiving a certificate. Mrs Voss would like to praise the team on being such great sporting ambassadors for Morgans.

  Cartoon Capers Nov 2010

Year 4 had a wonderful 2 days last week, working with a cartoonist Kev courteousy of the County Museum Service Officer, Jane Munns. They produced a class comic each, one involving 'Mr Hardy the Kleptomaniac' and the other, 'Bullgog!' They also studied the painting ' Paris Market', which is on loan from the County art collection. Both classes are producing their own cartoon montage of a market scene inspired by the painting. Here they are working alongside Kev, who was extremely talented and works on the Beano currently. The scrooge posters to appear shortly around the school are an example of his work.

  Tree-mendous Effort Nov 2010

Yesterday six of Year 4 went tree planting in the school's nature reserve. We had to borrow boots because some of us did not have any and it was muddy. The adults had to dig us holes to put our rose trees in because it was a lot quicker and easier. Next we had to add extra soil around the plant. We enjoyed the planting and best of all we got jelly babies at the end. Thanks to the adults who helped.

Report by Harvey Sanz and Leila Caliskan

The trees arrived as part of our commitment to the Active Kids programme sponsored by Sainsburys.  They include cherry, blackthorn and dog rose.  We plan to add some manure and then place protective sleeves against the likely attack of Muntjac deer and wild rabbits, in due course.

Year 4 Celtic Harmony Camp Visit Nov 2010

Year 4 had a brilliant and informative visit to Celtic Harmony Camp on Wednesday and returned much more knowledgeable about the Celts through many first hand experiences.

"We got gooey fingers when making bread!" Leila Caliskan
"I didn't know they made soup and we got to smell the herbs they used!" Kiran Buck
"We went foraging and had to find fake mushrooms and fruit and find out if these could be eaten or not." Jade Haddock
And. "We went to the shop!" All of the above.

One of the Celts (Owain, the warrior) must have had an ancient Norwegian ancestor, since he bore a more than uncanny resemblance to a Viking warrior who visited us a few weeks ago!!! Thank you to all accompanying parents who assisted during the day.

Figurative poems about an interesting place Oct 2010

This week Year 4 treated the rest of the school to their figurative poems about an interesting place. Metaphors, similes and all abundant alliteration where in plentiful supply. Under the ocean, a dark wood and icy mountains all featured, along with this Antarctica poem by Madeline:

Antarctica

Antarctica is a breezy blanket,
As windy as a blizzard,
It is a magnificent blanket of soft smooth snow.
Freezing frozen figures of identical ice,
Stampeding growling petrifying polar bears,
All as white as a doves feather,
Silent sliding silly prepared penguins,
As slow as a slimy snail!

Viking Invasion Sept 2010

On Monday Year 4 had a very informative and exciting morning meeting 4 Vikings and undertaking a range of activities. Writing runes, making herb bags, Viking jewellery and weaving were all tried by the children and they thoroughly enjoyed the event.

"The best bit was when the Orme Magneson, a Viking warrior, ran inside the school wearing armour and scared us with a giant sword and massive shield, nearly bigger than him!" Nathan Craddock

"We got to fight using shields. The adults had real shields, but we only had little wooden ones. The children still won!" Jade Haddock

All Creatures Great and Small June 2010

Year 4 are making animal shelters for a 'mini-mammal' and so on Wednesday, for first hand experience, met a hedgehog, a tortoise and a chinchilla. They had the opportunity to ask questions about the habitats and welfare conditions required. Thank you to Emma and Hannah, from The Chestnut's Veterinary Surgery for their time. Year 4 now need to bring in any necessary materials from which to make their shelters.
